Check your sources!
No matter what reference management software you use, you are responsible for your sources, so make sure they are correct. You should choose a reference style and stick to that throughout your assignment. Common reference styles are APA and IEEE, but check if your supervisor has a preference. Check out out Geology page for the recommended style for IER students.
Which reference management software will you use?
You will need a place to store all the references you find during your literature searches. There are different reference management software available, such as:
Will you write your papers in Microsoft Word or LaTeX?
If you plan on writing your papers in Microsoft Word, then EndNote and Zotero are great options for you. At UiS, EndNote is the most commonly used reference management software for Word users. Zotero is an open-source alternative.
If you plan on using LaTeX for your papers, BibLaTeX is the main reference management software. If you prefer a more graphical software to manage your references, then JabRef is a great EndNote alternative for LaTeX users. It is also possible to use EndNote or Zotero and export your reference library to BibLaTeX at a later stage. You can find information on reference management in LaTeX on our LaTeX page (LaTeX 2).
